How Many Reusable Pads Do I Need?

If you’re thinking about switching to reusable cloth pads, one of the first questions you might have is: how many pads do I actually need? The answer depends on a few factors, including the length of your period, your flow, and how often you want to do laundry during your cycle.

Understanding Your Flow

Before we dive into the number of pads you'll need, it's important to understand your menstrual flow. Lil Helper offers a range absorbency options:

- HyPs Active: With Wings & Non-slip silicon dots

- HyPs WoW: Without Wings & Non-slip silicon dots

- HyPs Original: With Wings (Lil Helper's Classic Pads)

- Hyps Teen: Perfect for smaller frames or lighter flows.

- Interlabial Pads: Perfect as added protection for other HyPs or Menstrual Products

Choosing the right absorbency level ensures comfort and leak protection throughout your period.

Average Cycle Length

The first factor to consider is the average length of your period.

If your period typically lasts for about 4-5 days, you'll likely need a different number of pads compared to someone whose period lasts for 7-8 days. It's important to take this into account when determining how many reusable cloth pads you should have in your stash.

Daily Pad Usage

On average, most individuals who use Lil Helper's HyPs Menstrual Pads report using up to 4 pads per day during their cycle. This number can vary depending on individual preferences and needs. Some people may find that they only need 2 or 3 pads per day. Very few of our customers report needing more than 4 a day, even on their heaviest days.

Washing Frequency

Another consideration is whether you are willing to wash your reusable pads part way through your cycle or not. If you prefer not to wash them until the end of your period, you will need more pads in order to have enough for each day.

Finding Your Perfect Number

Here’s a simple way to estimate:

-Calculate the average length of your period.

-Multiply the number of days by the maximum pads you expect to use per day (we recommend 4 as a guideline).

-Adjust based on how often you plan to wash your pads.

It’s always better to have a few extra than not enough—you’ll have peace of mind and flexibility throughout your cycle.

Starting Small

If you’re new to reusable pads, starting with a small selection is a great way to try them out without feeling overwhelmed. See how they fit into your routine, how often you wash, and which absorbency works best. Once you’ve found what works, you can expand your collection gradually.

Reusable pads are usually more absorbent than disposable ones, so you may find you need fewer than you expect. Over time, a well-sized collection will make managing your period easier and more sustainable.

This guide is meant to give a general idea of pad use throughout your cycle. Everyone’s flow and needs are different, so adjust based on your body, daily activities, and comfort. Always listen to what works best for you!

And the next big question, how do you wash Reusable Menstrual Pads?

- Line-dry for best results: Sunlight naturally disinfects and helps fade stains.

- Pre-soak if needed: Helps lift blood before washing.

- Hand washing is fine: Gently massage with mild detergent, rinse, press excess water, and air-dry.

Making the switch to reusable pads is not only beneficial for the environment, it’s also great for your comfort and peace of mind. By finding the right number for your cycle and habits, you can make the transition smoothly and confidently.

  • Thank you for creating this discount option. Just three years ago, I was homeless and living in a shelter with my two children, and even sanitary pads felt too expensive. While in the shelter, I did not always receive the same resources as others due to discrimination.

Today, I am proud to say that I am a Registered Nurse. I dream of one day doing for others what a kind and beautiful nurse once did for me—purchasing and donating a care package. Now that I know about your new pads, I can include them, and I hope that one day they will be widely available in stores!

Having a 12-year-old who just started her period, I finally purchased your new pads, and they are wonderful. More than that, I’m grateful that you are looking out for people like me, for whom this option would have once been out of reach. I used to be priced out of regular products, but now I can both provide for my daughter and also help someone else—just as I was once helped, not only given more inclusivity but also gained a customer.

  • Hi There! We just purchased some menstrual products for my 11 year old. She loves them. She says they are better for the environment (D’uh!), they’re soft, AND you don’t get an unexpected waxing if the pad shifts!!!
She also LOVES the sense of humour of your website and your letter that was included in her first package.
Keep up the awesome-possum good work!!!
